The Prequel To Fate’s True Colors

artist statement

As a reinterpretation of the past, and a look back at a seldom seen aspect of American life, the creation of The Prequel to Fate’s True Colors began with a gravitation toward certain childhood photos. From there I looked beyond the original photos to compose titles for what each photo seemed to represent, which then allowed me to stage, construct, and photograph scenes of a hidden and much lesser known reality. Paintings were created from these staged and collaged photos.

In this series, I look into the past to create a physical representation of previously unacknowledged moments whose significance went undetected and whose meaning was not yet understood. A past containing an ignored reality that, although not captured in regular everyday photos of the time, contained subtle moments that foretold the future.
